Good managers and leaders know what is going on:
• by being very visible with frequently scheduled and unannounced visits at all hours;
• through the use of skip-level meetings;
• heeding advice from really trusted associates;
• by listening carefully, in addition to making policies, practices and standards very clear to all the people in their organizations;
• by being open to bad news as well as good;
• by demanding that all training be appropriate and current;
• by rotating assignments and use of task forces and other teams;
• by requiring well designed measurements and reports on a timely basis;
• by checking out rumors from the grapevines;
• by taking complaints from insiders and outsiders seriously, discerning the real problems in the constant fog of whining;
• by taking action promptly on wrongdoing and letting everyone know such behavior isn’t tolerated;
• by utilizing internal and external auditors outside the chain of command.
People up through the one or two star General level at least could have known, should have known, must have known what was going on in our prisons in Iraq and elsewhere.
So, what illegal, immoral or unethical activities might be going on in your organization today
that require your personal attention right now?
